Italy August car sales down 19 pct, Fiat shr 30.6 pct

MILAN, Sept 1 | Wed Sep 1, 2010 12:01pm EDT

MILAN, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Italy's new car sales fell 19.27 percent year-on-year in August, the Transport Ministry said on Wednesday, and Fiat SpA's (FIA.MI) market share was back above its target at 30.65 percent.

Italy's new car sales totalled 68,718 units, as the loss of incentives to buy less-polluting cars -- a Fiat strength -- continued to take its toll.

Fiat's Italy August new car sales were down 26.4 percent year-on-year at 21,065.

Fiat's market share in July was 29.09 percent. In May, Fiat's market share fell under its target of 30 percent for the first time since December 2005.
