US STOCKS SNAPSHOT-Wall St extends gains on manufacturing data

NEW YORK, Sept 1 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks extended broad-based gains on Wednesday, rising more than 2 percent after data showed the manufacturing sector grew more quickly than expected in August.

* The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI gained 226.98 points, or 2.27 percent, to 10,241.70. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX jumped 26.17 points, or 2.49 percent, to 1,075.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC climbed 52.83 points, or 2.50 percent, to 2,166.86.

* Stocks opened strongly higher as new signs of growth in China and Australia eased concerns about the global economy's health and investors shrugged off an unexpected cut in U.S. private sector payrolls.
