WASHINGTON, Sept 1 (Reuters) - A top White House economic adviser warned on Wednesday that the United States was suffering from a serious lack of demand and urged President Barack Obama to act quickly to bring down unemployment.

"The United States still faces a substantial shortfall of aggregate demand. GDP by most estimates is still about 6 percent below trend," Christina Romer, chairwoman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said in prepared remarks. (Reporting by Alister Bull; Editing by Andrea Ricci)
