FACTBOX-Canadian energy companies resume operations after Earl
(Adds EnCana and Imperial Oil comments)
Sept 6 (Reuters) - Canadian energy companies began restarting operations Monday after Hurricane Earl made landfall in the Canadian Maritimes on Saturday before fizzling out, while U.S. energy operations were unscathed by the storm.
Earl had stayed mostly offshore and caused far less damage than feared on its path up the U.S. coast from North Carolina, before making landfall in Canada on Saturday.
The storm, downgraded successively from a fierce Category 4 hurricane, never packed the punch feared earlier in the week, when experts warned of possible widespread damage in a region that includes about 1.1 million barrels per day of U.S. oil refining capacity.
* Encana Corp (ECA.TO) said it expected drilling operations to resume
Monday evening at its Deep Panuke prospect offshore Nova Scotia, after
operations were suspended ahead of Earl as workers return to the drilling
platform evacuated on Friday. For details, see [ID:nN06107722]
* The storm, with initial gusts of 80 mph (130 kph), cut power to 200,000 homes and business across the Atlantic province of Nova Scotia, with a population of about 940,000. The Nova Scotia power authority said Saturday it could be two days before full power is restored. [ID:nN04157620]
* Imperial Oil Ltd (IMO.TO) said Monday it had begun the sequenced restart
of its 82,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, after the
plant was shut Friday ahead of Earl. The plant sustained no major damage from
the storm, a company spokesman said. [ID:nN06191082]
