GLOBAL MARKETS
The euro was on the defensive on Wednesday after renewed fears about the euro zone banking system drove it to life lows against the Swiss franc and Australian dollar, hitting financial stocks and dragging equity markets in Europe and the United States lower. [ID:nSGE68702W]

SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS The South African rand weakened against the dollar on Tuesday as dealers traded cautiously in anticipation of a rate cut this week and domestic stocks also fell. [ID:nLDE6861ZH]
NIGERIA ELECTION
Nigeria will hold presidential polls on Jan. 22, the electoral commission said on Tuesday, putting pressure on President Goodluck Jonathan to say whether he will stand and leaving little time for badly-needed reforms. [ID:nLDE68623S]

MOZAMBIQUE PROTEST
Mozambique's government will reverse a bread price increase after food riots in which 13 people were killed last week, the planning minister said on Tuesday. [ID:nLDE6861RP]
KENYA WEATHER
Meteorologists said rainfall during Kenya's short rainy season later this year is expected to be less than usual and also may be depressed in the first half of 2011, which could curb agricultural output. [ID:nLDE6861NO]
NIGERIA MARKETS
Nigeria's Seven Up (7UP.LG) rises almost five percent after posting a 19 percent rise in full-year pre-tax profit and proposing a 1.75 naira dividend and bonus share issue. [ID:nLDE68517Y]
Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves fell 5.58 percent to $36 billion as of Sept. 2, 2010 from $38.2 billion in mid-August, the central bank said on Tuesday.
KENYA MARKETS
The Nairobi Stock Exchange's main index, NSE-20 .NSE20 dropped 3.05 points to close at 4,424.72. Charts showed the levels to watch are 4,200-4,700 with a break either way signaling new direction. [ID:nLDE6861IM]
Shares in Kenyan telecoms operator Safaricom (SCOM.NR) rose 2.13 percent on Tuedsay, recovering from oversold levels following worries about possible price war after rival Zain drastically cut prices. [ID:nLDE686157]
Rwanda's capital market regulator approved the cross-listing of Kenya's Nation Media Group (NMG) (NMG.NR) pending the submission of final documents, a senior director at the regulator said on Tuesday. [ID:nLDE6861Y8]
The Kenyan shilling KES= retreated against the dollar on Tuesday amid investor risk-aversion, and traders said the market would keep an eye on central bank foreign exchange purchases.
At 0530 GMT, it was quoted at 81.00/20 per dollar, little changed from Tuesday's close.
GHANA MARKETS
Shares in consumer goods producer Unilever Ghana Limited (UNIL.GH) jumped nearly 14 percent on strong demand from institutional investors, leading the Ghana all share index higher. [ID:nLDE6861ZI]
UGANDA COFFEE
Heavy rains in central Uganda where the coffee harvest is due to begin soon could disrupt the drying process and lower bean quality, thereby hurting prices, a coffee union official told Reuters on Tuesday. [ID:nLDE6861T4]

The average price for Kenya's top quality tea edged up to $3.47 per kg at Tuesday's auction from $3.41 last week, brokers said. [ID:nLDE6861XR]
WEST AFRICAN BUSINESSES
