TOKYO, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average dropped 2.1 percent on Wednesday, pulling back further towards a 16-month low, as the yen's advance to a new 15-year high sapped investor confidence and hit shares of exporters.

The benchmark Nikkei .N225 fell 188.72 points to 9,037.28, back towards a 16-month low of 8,796.45 hit this month.

The broader Topix .TOPX lost 1.8 percent to 820.17. (Reporting by Aiko Hayashi; Editing by Edwina Gibbs)
