Sept 30 (Reuters) - Professional services firm Resources Connection Inc (RECN.O) first-quarter results beat expectations despite a decline in international revenues, helped by lower expenses and a growth in sales in the United States.

For the July-September period, the company, which operates under the name Resources Global Professionals, posted a net income of $1.2 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $7.2 million, or 16 cents a share, a year ago.

Revenue for the company, whose rivals include Manpower Inc (MAN.N) and Michael Page (MPI.L), rose about 5 percent to $123.7 million.

U.S. revenue was up about 9 percent, while international revenue fell 3 percent on a constant dollar basis.

Analysts on average had expected the company to breakeven on revenue of $120.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares of the Irvine, California-based company, which have risen 23 percent since hitting a 52-week low of $11 on Aug. 31, closed at $13.76 Thursday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Soham Chatterjee in Bangalore; Editing by Vyas Mohan)
