SAN FRANCISCO, CA, Oct 12 (MARKET WIRE) --
SquareTrade, the largest independent warranty provider in the world,
analyzed iPhone accidents for over 20,000 iPhone 4s covered by
SquareTrade and found an 82 percent increase in reported broken screens
compared to the iPhone 3GS.

    Highlights of the study include:

-- iPhone 4 owners reported 82 percent more damaged screens in the first
four months compared to iPhone 3GS owners
-- More than 25 percent of damage reported was to the glass on the back
    of the unit
-- The reported accident rate for the iPhone 4 was 68 percent higher than
    for the iPhone 3GS
-- An estimated 15.5 percent of iPhone 4 owners will have an accident
within a year of buying their phone

The study looked at data from the first four months of the phone's
availability and found Apple's decision to add a second glass screen on
the back of the device appears to be causing more breakage and
contributing to a higher overall the accident rate for the iPhone 4.
While cracked and broken screens have always accounted for the vast
majority of iPhone accidents, on the iPhone 4 screen damage is
responsible for more than four-fifths of reported accidents during the
last four months, slightly higher than the iPhone 3GS during the same
time period. Of the breakage incidents, more than 25 percent have
occurred to the glass on the back of the device.

Based on this data, the iPhone 4 appears to be more fragile than previous
versions, as SquareTrade speculated in its June iPhone report.
