UPDATE 1-Cerner Q3 profit beats estimates

Oct 28 (Reuters) - Health information technology company Cerner Corp (CERN.O) posted a better-than-expected quarterly profit, helped by strong bookings.

For the quarter ended Oct.2, the company earned $60.9 million, or 71 cents a share, compared with $48.4 million, or 57 cents a share, a year ago. Excluding items, it earned 76 cents a share.

Revenue for the quarter rose 13 percent to $462.7 million.

Analysts on average expected earnings of 74 cents a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $465.6 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

For the third quarter, bookings rose 17 percent to $495.7 million.

For the fourth quarter, the company expects adjusted earnings between 80-85 cents a share and revenue of $490-$510 million.

Analysts expect earnings of 84 cents a share on revenue of $506.32.

Kansas City, Missouri-based Cerner's shares, which have risen 15 percent since it posted second-quarter results in July, were down slightly after the bell at $86.87. They closed at $87.25 Thursday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Shravya Jain in Bangalore; Editing by Don Sebastian)
