PERUGIA, Italy (Reuters) - An Italian court on Monday ordered the jailed American student Amanda Knox to stand trial for slandering police officers during the investigation into the killing of her British roommate.

Knox, whose trial created a global media sensation, was sentenced to 26 years' jail in December for her part in the murder of Meredith Kercher after what judges said was a frenzied sex game that spiraled out of control.

Knox was charged with slandering police after accusing officers of beating her during the investigation. The slander charge is separate from the murder case, which is due to go to an appeal hearing on November 24.

Prosecutors said the slander trial will begin on May 17.

Kercher's partly unclothed body was found in November 2007, locked in her blood-spattered bedroom in the house she shared with Knox and two other students in the university town of Perugia. It had a deep stab wound in the throat.

Knox's then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito and another man, Rudy Guede, were also convicted for their part in the murder.

Are we sure this trial is not taking place in legal-happy US? Even here this blatant demonstration of ultimate prosecutor power would be hauled in. But face it — if by some miracle, Ms. Knox is found not guilty by a reasonable judicial system in Italy, she will be arrested going to the airport because she told her police escort to speed and be sentenced to 20 years.

And given the apparent lack of morals in the prosecutorial and police offices there, I hope they want her alive for some reason — otherwise there is going to be either an inconconvient and fatal occurrence in her jail or she will callously take her own life with no witnesses and no note.

It was judge Matteini who decided that Knox should be tried for the 2007 murder of her British housemate Meredith Kercher. Matteini also ruled against giving Knox house arrest while she was waiting to learn whether she would be officially charged. Judge Claudia stupidly assessed that “Angel Face’s” sweet Knox’s personality as “negative”, she incorrectly determined that Knox was a flight risk despite the fact that Knox voluntarily remained in Perugia despite having the clear opportunity to flee any time in the 6 days following the murder.

Judge Matteini also made the serious judicial blunder of believing the report that Knox pressed her fingers so hard into Kercher’s face that fingerprints could be retrieved. Mattaini also believed that Knox had destroyed the clothes she wore on the day before the murder, which turned out to be more bad judgement. Lastly, Mattaini foolishly believed that Know was inclined to return to the scene of the crime and cleaned up evidence.

This judge is not the brightest bulb in the lamp. But she is trainable enough to issue a guilty verdict.
