Mets owner sued by Madoff trustee

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The owners of the New York Mets Major League Baseball club were sued by the trustee seeking to recover money from Bernard Madoff's massive Ponzi scheme.

The lawsuit against team owner Fred Wilpon, his firm Sterling Equities and other defendants was filed under seal in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York. The trustee said he is in talks with the defendants to resolve the claims.

"We are currently engaged in good-faith negotiations with the Sterling defendants," court-appointed trustee Irving Picard said in a separate statement.

A Sterling Equities representative was not immediately available for comment.

The owners of the New York Mets made about $48 million in dealings with swindler Madoff, court documents filed in October 2009 showed.
