Netflix in Starz talks, says deal not essential
LOS ANGELES |
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Online video provider Netflix Inc is in talks to renew a key content pact with Liberty Media Corp's Starz, but also said the deal was not essential to its success.
Speaking at the Barclays Capital Global Technology Conference, Netflix executives said they were in contact with Starz and believed they will find a way to reach a deal, but also added a Starz deal was not essential to its future.
Analysts and Hollywood insiders are watching the outcome of these talks carefully, particularly after studio executives have expressed disbelief over the 2008 deal with Starz to offer films from Sony Corp and Walt Disney Co for $20 million to $30 million, which put Netflix's streaming service on the map for a fraction of what cable operators had paid Starz.
Netflix executives also said they see a record fourth quarter for DVD shipments, even as they expressed the view that DVD shipments should decline in years ahead as more viewers move to watching videos streamed online.
