Democrats drop funding fight, opt for short-term deal

WASHINGTON Dec 16 (Reuters) - In a surprise victory for Republicans, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said on Thursday he would abandon efforts to pass a $1.1 trillion spending bill and instead extend current funding.

The move will likely give Republicans a greater chance to push for the deep spending cuts they have promised, as they will control the House of Representatives and wield greater clout in the Senate starting in January.
