UPDATE 1-Wi-LAN settles with Acer, finalizes Intel deal
* Reaches deal with Acer, finalizes Intel agreement
* Has also settled with Broadcom and Atheros this month
* Apple, HP, others still face trial starting Feb. 3
TORONTO, Jan 26 (Reuters) - Canadian patent licensing company Wi-LAN (WIN.TO) has reached a deal to drop its lawsuit against PC maker Acer APR.CN and has finalized an agreement to end a dispute with chipmaker Intel (INTC.O), the company said on Wednesday.
Since announcing a preliminary multi-year deal to license its entire patent portfolio to Intel on Jan. 14, Wi-LAN has also reached licensing deals with chipmakers Broadcom (BRCM.O) and Atheros, which is set to be acquired by Qualcomm (QCOM.O). [ID:nN14279861] [ID:nSGE70J0C9] [ID:nSGE70I0DU]
Terms of the deals have not been disclosed.
Ottawa-based Wi-LAN filed two separate lawsuits, dubbed the laptop case and the router case, in October 2007 against 22 companies for infringement of its wireless and Internet patents. Wi-LAN hold patents relating to WiFi, CDMA, bluetooth and DSL technologies.
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ.N) and Apple (AAPL.O) are also among the defendants in the case. Acer is the first computer maker, rather than chipmaker, to reach a deal in the case.
The trial for companies that do not settle is set to begin on Feb. 3. [ID:nN08189481]
Shares in Wi-LAN were down 0.3 percent at C$6.57 on the Toronto Stock Exchange soon after the company released its statement on Wednesday afternoon. They have risen 3 percent since the start of the year.
