Vestas says has cut 2,200 jobs out of 3,000

COPENHAGEN | Fri Jan 28, 2011 6:12am EST

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Danish wind turbine maker Vestas said on Friday it had carried out 2,200 out of 3,000 planned layoffs mainly at five plants in Denmark and Sweden and would implement the rest before the end of June.

The layoffs due to overcapacity in Europe were announced in October.

"In January and February 300 of the 800 will be dismissed primarily in Europe and across business units," Vestas Wind Systems A/S said in a statement.

About 500 more job reductions will occur from March to the beginning of June, said Vestas, which has more than 22,000 employees around the world.
