Floodwaters sweep away Bolivian bus, killing 31
LA PAZ |
LA PAZ (Reuters) - Floodwaters swept away a bus and a truck as they crossed a swollen river in southern Bolivia, killing at least 31 people, police said on Monday.
Children were among those killed in the incident, which took place in a remote area some 200 km (125 miles) from the city of Sucre, the poor Andean nation's constitutional capital.
"We have policemen, people from the provincial government and the army helping with the search and rescue mission but the area is too large," Police Chief Ivan Marquez told the ABI state news agency.
Marquez said the incident happened on Friday, but the remote location meant the details took days to come to light. At least 19 people were also hurt, he said.
Survivors told local media how they grabbed onto rocks and plants to stop themselves being pulled into the water as the vehicles crossed the flooded Mollepunku river.
Floods frequently cause devastation in Bolivia during January, the height of the rainy season. Leftist Bolivian President Evo Morales has blamed extreme weather on pollution from wealthy nations.

And yes, he is right. Bolivian contributes little if any to the global warming, compared to the wealthy nations of US and Europe.
Report the news, and stop labeling people. Be the solution to world problems.
Most persons in and in countries around Bolivia consider Morales a leftist as well.
He also tries to make the USA appear to be the devil as it pertains to the belief in global warming. Most people know that Bolivia has less emissions because it is a poor country. Even so, Morales tries to get people upset. PS: I’m Bolivian, you’re not.
