SAO PAULO Feb 1 (Reuters) - Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff picked former central bank chief Henrique Meirelles to manage an agency coordinating investments for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Meirelles, the longest serving central bank chief, stepped down in December after eight years at the helm of the bank.

He will be in charge of the Olympics Public Authority, created by Rousseff's predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Congress is expected to pass a law establishing the authority by March, O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper said.

Representatives from the federal, state and city governments will make up the agency, which is expected to have a budget of around 30 billion reais ($18 billion).

The agency, whose creation was agreed upon with the International Olympic Committee, will be responsible for coordinating investments, mostly in infrastructure, planned for the Olympic Games that will take place in Rio in 2016. ($1 = 1.672 reais) (Reporting by Inae Riveras)
