NEW YORK (Reuters) - Port of Los Angeles said on Friday it suspended cargo operations as precaution against a tsunami on the Pacific Ocean following a massive earthquake in Japan.

"Federal officers have warned us to expect a minor surge of 12 to 18 inches in the next one to two hours," spokesman Philip Sanfield said.

The port has closed off nearby Cabrillo and Royal Palms beach as a precaution.

The port will resume all cargo operations once it ascertains there will be no further risk, Sanfield said.
