BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian security forces fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of protesters staging a sit-in in one of the main squares of the southern town of Deraa, a witness in Deraa said.

"Several hundred youths were trying to stage a sit-in ... and they were dispersed by central security forces who fired tear gas on them," the witness said.

The protesters were calling for the downfall of President Bashar al-Assad's rule.
