TOKYO | Thu Mar 31, 2011 2:06am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said on Thursday that the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in northeastern Japan needs to be decommissioned, Kyodo news agency reported.

The plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power Co has said it would scrap reactors No. 1, 2, 3 and 4 and consider whether to decommission reactors No. 5 and 6, after cooling functions at the facility were damaged by a March 11 quake and tsunami.
