MAZAR-I-SHARIF, Afghanistan, April 1 (Reuters) - Afghan insurgents used mass protests against Koran burning as cover to launch an attack on the United Nations building in northern Mazar-i-Sharif city, in which at least seven foreigners were killed, the governor of Northern Balkh province said.

"The insurgents have taken advantage of the situation to attack the United Nations compound," said Governor Ata Mohammad Noor at a news conference after the assault.

Five Afghan demonstrators were killed and 20 others were wounded in the violence, which began soon after Friday prayers, Noor added. (Reporting by Bashir Mohammad; Editing by Alex Richardson)
