ACCIONA Energy Brings Lamèque Wind Power Project Online
ACCIONA Energy announced today that its Lamèque Wind Power Project, located in the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick, is now commercially operational. The 45 MW wind farm, initiated by La Coopérative d’Énergie Renouvelable de Lamèque, began construction late last summer. New Brunswick Power is the designated off-taker of the power, via a long-term Power Purchase Agreement. The project has received support from the Government of Canada’s ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program, with an investment of up to 13.79 million dollars over ten years. The Lamèque Wind Power Project is ACCIONA Energy’s fourth wind farm in Canada.
ACCIONA Energy has invested approximately 115 million dollars in the Lamèque Wind Power Project. The project’s thirty 1.5 MW ACCIONA Windpower wind turbines are spread over approximately 3,100 acres. Sixty-eight landowners have lease agreements and are participating in the development. Construction of the Lamèque Wind Power Project brought hundreds of jobs and economic growth to the region. The power generated at the Lamèque Wind Power Project will be distributed to the region through the New Brunswick Power transmission grid and will supply enough energy for approximately 8,000 homes per year.
“Bringing the Lamèque Wind Power Project online has been a collaborative effort involving several key partners and the support of the people of the Acadian Peninsula,” said Dan Foley, CEO, ACCIONA Energy North America. “We are very proud of this project and are pleased to see it successfully generating energy for the region. Proof that with the right partners and hard work, we can create clean energy that benefits the community via job creation and economic growth.”
“I want to congratulate ACCIONA Energy for all their hard work in constructing and maintaining this facility,” said New Brunswick Energy Minister, Craig Leonard. “Congratulations also to La Coopérative d’Énergie Renouvelable de Lamèque for its foresight on what this project could be and what it has become,” he added.
"This is a step forward in NB Power’s vision of Sustainable Electricity. To ensure that we have sustainable electricity, we need to meet the needs of today while ensuring the future. We will achieve this through activities that balance our economic, environmental and social objectives - the three pillars of sustainability. To be successful, we know that we must seek new and innovative solutions as we work together in a collaborative effort," said Gaetan Thomas, President and CEO, NB Power. "Ensuring that we have the right balance of renewables as a part of our energy portfolio is essential. Our partnership with ACCIONA Energy plays an important role in further diversifying our generation mix to include more renewable energy. It assists us in achieving our renewable targets, contributes to lower emissions and supports our vision of sustainability – meeting the needs of today while ensuring tomorrow."
The Lamèque Wind Power Project is a model for ACCIONA’s many complementary capabilities. The project was developed and is wholly-owned and operated by ACCIONA Energy, was constructed by ACCIONA Infrastructure, utilizes ACCIONA Windpower turbines.
A formal dedication event at the site will be held this summer.
Assets and Projects in Canada
In addition to the Lamèque Wind Power Project, ACCIONA Energy owns and operates 136 MW in three wind farms in Canada with local partners Suncor and Enbridge. Two of these farms – Magrath and Chin Chute (each with a capacity of 30 MW) – are located in Alberta, and the third – Ripley (76 MW) – is in Ontario. With the commencement of commercial operations of the Lamèque Wind Power Project, the total capacity installed by ACCIONA Energy in Canada will increase to 181 MW.
ACCIONA is also present in Canada in its infrastructure division. In addition to the division's work to construct the Lamèque Wind Power Project, which it did in a joint venture with Canada’s Tetra Tech, it also has five projects that have been developed in PPP (public-private partnership): two toll highways (the Southeast Stoney Trail, in Calgary, and the New Autoroute 30 Châteauguay – Vaudreuil-Dorion in Quebec); one freeway (Windsor Essex Parkway, in Ontario) and two hospitals (Fort St. John, in British Columbia, and Royal Jubilee, in Victoria).
