TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average edged higher on Tuesday after hitting a fresh five-week low, with gains in Sony Corp (6758.T) and construction machinery shares helping to offset worries about the euro-zone debt crisis and the U.S. economy.

The benchmark Nikkei .N225 closed the day up 0.2 percent at 9,477.17, after touching a five-week intraday low of 9,406.04 in the morning. Its drop stalled near support at its April 19 low near 9,405.

The broader Topix index gained 0.2 percent to 819.16 .TOPX, having pulled up from a two-month intraday low of 812.52 earlier in the day.
