S.Africa union may appeal Wal-Mart deal -spokesman

JOHANNESBURG May 31 (Reuters) - South Africa's union of service industry workers may appeal the approval of Wal-Mart's (WMT.N) $2.4 billion bid for Massmart (MSMJ.J), a union spokesman said on Tuesday. "We are meeting with our legal representatives to explore legal possibilities," said Mike Abrahams, a spokesman for the South Africa Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU), told Reuters.

The union could consider appealing to the Competition Appeals Court, Abrahams said, a move that could further delay the deal.

SACCAWU is the largest union among Massmart employees.

South African competition authorities approved Wal-Mart's bid to take a 51 percent stake in Massmart with minimal conditions, handing a big setback to unions that had opposed the deal. (Reporting by Tiisetso Motsoeneng; Editing by David Dolan)
