SANTA CRUZ, CA, Jun 17 (MARKET WIRE) --
Plantronics (NYSE: PLT) today announced that its headquartered office has
the largest solar and sun tube installation in the Santa Cruz County, to
date. This new solar installment will save approximately 575,000 kilowatt
hours of energy on an annual basis. To celebrate National SolarDay and
the achievement of this major energy milestone, the company invites
guests and media to tour the eco-friendly facility in the coming weeks
and ask questions about Plantronics energy-saving initiatives.
The Plantronics Santa Cruz facility has more than 500 employees and
continues to invest in environmental friendly initiatives such as
installing over 340 solar tubes throughout the office cubicles to collect
and redirect sun light and provide more natural light in the office,
therefore reducing the power consumption throughout the building. This
solar system was fully implemented in late May and is expected to offset
upwards of 80 percent of its utility bill.
"On the heels of our 50th company anniversary, we are thrilled to
celebrate National SolarDay this year and share the details of our solar
system initiative," said Dolores Nelson, Director of Facilities for
Plantronics. "With the backing of U.S. Congresswoman Doris Matsuai and
California Senator Dianne Feinstein, SolarDay 2011 is a day meant to
educate the public on the benefits of solar energy and cost savings.
Plantronics is taking the necessary steps to become a more sustainable
company for its employees and the citizens of Santa Cruz County and we
thank those who have been supportive of our actions and future plans."
In the Santa Cruz and Mexico facilities, Plantronics has implemented the
following programs and results:
Santa Cruz - Solar System, Recycling and Water Usage:
-- The new solar system size is 608,090 W (i.e. 608 kW), resulting in a
new combined system of 870,590 W (i.e. 871 kW)
-- The recycling program has reduced truck pickups from seven times per
month down to just 1.5 times per month. The company recycles all
cardboard, small batteries, fluorescent tubes and e-waste.
-- The company installed WeatherTRAK controls (smart irrigation based on
local satellite data) for watering its landscape, including
drought-tolerant plants, saving approximately 250,000 gallons of water
per year. Additionally, the company saves about 300,000 gallons of
water per year with the use of waterless urinals. In total, a savings
of 550,000 gallons of water is saved on an annual basis.
Mexico - Recycling:
-- The Mexico facility recycles on average more than 2.5 million pounds
of material (cardboard, plastics, cables and components) annually.
-- In total, between the Santa Cruz and Mexico facilities, the company
has recycled more than three million pounds of material, annually.
