BANGALORE (Reuters) - Zynga filed on Friday for an initial public offering of up to $1 billion, the latest in a series of hot social media companies to seek capital in the U.S. public markets.
Here are a few facts about the company, the top game publisher on Facebook:
- Zynga was named after company founder Mark Pincus' American bulldog, Zinga.
- The name Zinga is a nod to a legendary African warrior queen.
- Peter Thiel, an investor in Zynga, was the co-founder of PayPal. He was also one of the earliest investors in Facebook and currently sits on its board of directors.
- Zynga is the world's largest social game developer with more than 250 million monthly active users.
- Zynga's games collectively have 232 million active monthly users, and 60 million daily active users.
- Zynga's popular games include FarmVille, Mafia Wars.
- Zynga is the fourth company to be founded by Mark Pincus. Pincus also started social-networking site Tribe.net, software company SupportSoft, which eventually went public, and FreeLoader, his first company, which opened in 1995.
- Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, sits on the Zynga board.
