SHANGHAI, July 29 (Reuters) - Greece won their first women's waterpolo title at the world swimming championships when they beat China 9-8 in the secondary Natatorium pool at the Oriental Sports Centre on Friday.

Greece led throughout and had held a two-goal cushion with just over two minutes remaining before the Chinese managed to get to 9-8.

The home team then turned over possession with just over 90 seconds remaining and with a chance to send the final into overtime but threw the ball away as they pressed for the game-tying goal.

Greece then simply ran down the clock to claim gold.

Russia beat Italy 8-7 earlier on Friday to win the bronze medal. (Reporting by Greg Stutchbury; Editing by Dave Thompson; To comment on this story email sportsfeedback@thomsonreuters.com) Please double click on the newslink: for more swimming stories
