Geokinetics Provides Further Update on Liftboat Incident Rescue
HOUSTON, TEXAS - September 12, 2011 - Geokinetics, Inc. (NYSE Amex: GOK) today confirmed that seven of the ten crew members that abandoned a disabled liftboat in the southern Gulf of Mexico last Thursday were rescued 51 miles off the coast of Campeche State Sunday, September 11, 2011. Sadly, one of these crew members has since passed away. Additionally, the bodies of two of the crew members who did not survive were recovered. The search continues for the one remaining crew member still missing.
It was previously reported that the crew members abandoned the Trinity II liftboat (similar to a jack-up rig) when it became disabled due to high seas generated by Tropical Storm Nate. The liftboat, owned by Trinity Liftboat Services (New Iberia, LA), was contracted to Geokinetics for a project in the Bay of Campeche. The Trinity captain communicated that the crew intended to abandon the liftboat around noon last Thursday, after which time all communication with the crew was lost. The ten member crew consisted of three Geokinetics employees, three independent contractors and four Trinity crewmen who operated the vessel. Initially, rescue efforts were hampered due to the storm, but rescue efforts intensified as the weather improved.
Richard F. Miles, President and Chief Executive Officer, is in Mexico awaiting more information on the condition of the survivors. Upon hearing the news, Miles stated, "Obviously, we are thankful for those who survived, but our hearts are heavy and we are deeply saddened by the loss of our co-workers." Miles also offered appreciation for the rescuers, "The Mexican marine authorities and others involved in the rescue are to be commended. Everyone is very thankful for their diligent search efforts."
