WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Tuesday it welcomed efforts by the international community to put a stop to violence in Syria but it still believed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should step down.

Syrian state television said a final agreement had been reached between Syrian authorities and an Arab League committee tasked with finding a solution to end seven months of unrest.
