(Reuters) - Apple Inc overtook Hewlett-Packard Co as the world's largest vendor of personal computers in the fourth quarter, helped by booming demand for its iPads, research firm Canalys said on Monday.

In the fourth quarter, tablet demand helped drive the global PC market 16 percent higher than a year ago to 120 million computers, Canalys said.

Excluding tablets, the market fell 0.4 percent from a year ago, said Canalys, one of the first research firms to include tablets in PC forecasts. Other firms have said they will likely follow.

While I think the Tablet is hot right now. I think it has a limit as to its market share. I like my iPad but I doubt it could ever replace my laptop. I find things I cannot do with it frequently and actually I uses it much less then I did when I first bought it.

I bought the original ipad when it was first released because the technology was cool. I use it occasionally now but the lack of flash support, removeable media, usb, make it more of a toy than a real computer. It suppliments a laptop/desktop but doesn’t replace one. People are buying tablets now because their laptop/desktop still works.
