ARLINGTON, Virginia (Reuters) - Jobs figures released on Friday show the U.S. economy is growing and healing, President Barack Obama said, calling on Congress to pass a payroll tax extension and avoid sabotaging the recovery.

"The economy is growing stronger. The recovery is speeding up. And we've got to do everything in our power to keep it going," he told an audience in a northern Virginia firehouse.

"Now is not the time for self-inflicted wounds to our economy," Obama said, describing his message to Congress as: "Do not slow down the recovery that we're on. Don't muck it up."

What people don’t realize is that while a payroll tax holiday sounds like a great idea (because it gives people more spending money) it is not the best stimulative option available.

Many policy experts like Len Burman and Howard Gleckman, have said that this payroll tax holiday is not the best solution for our persistent demand problem. http://nyti.ms/qu39cL The reason is that the payroll tax holiday is not well-targeted because higher income earners also receive the tax cut. http://bit.ly/uvIDMJ

A payroll tax holiday might be the only policy Congress can ultimately agree on (and that’s up for debate), but it is definitely not the most effective option. http://bit.ly/qsFK2y
