Nokia working on own tablet: design chief

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari is spending a third of his time on creating a tablet for the cellphone maker, which would stand out among hundreds of iPad-challengers, he said in an interview with Finnish magazine Kauppalehti Optio.
"We are working on it," he was quoted as saying.
Nokia's Chief Executive Stephen Elop has said the category is interesting for the Finnish company, but has stressed the need for a different approach to numerous rivals trying to battle against the dominance of Apple's iPad.
"We continue to eye the tablet space with interest, but have made no specific announcements," a company spokesman said on Thursday.
Nokia is widely expected to launch an own tablet using Microsoft's Windows 8 software later this year.

Software and ecosystem are perhaps their only two degrees of freedom. For software, their ship is tied to Microsoft and they survive or sink depending on how Microsoft’s OSes fair. For ecosystem, it ‘s some of the same but Nokia has the additional problem that they’ve been creating and destroying multiple ecosystems over the past few years, telling the users of each one in turn that “This one is really it! We really mean it this time!” and then abandoning those users a year or two later, forcefully shoving them out the door. Would you trust your data to any promised Nokia ecosystem?
This doesn’t mean that Nokia can’t succeed; just based on the momentum they still have in many markets, they could at least become competitive. But the odds of actually coming out with an outright iPad killer are quite low and always have been.

* At least the last few years saw Nokia give up on their misguided love for resistive touchscreens over capacitive multitouch touchscreens!
Apple doesn’t make the iPad components, Samsung makes the new screen. No reason why a huge company like Nokia won’t continue to use top quality components too. I think where Nokia will stand out is on the hardware design and accessories. Look at the gorgeous Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. The only other phone design on the market that compares to the Lumia is the iPhone. The Bluetooth headset and NFC speakers from Nokia are really innovative too.
