Analysis to Show Health Costs From Nearly 20 U.S. Coal- Fired Power Plants Higher Than Value of Electricity Generated

PR Newswire

"Net Loss" Report From EIP Highlights Premature Mortality Linked to 18 Coal-Fired Power Plants in 13 States:  AL, GA, KY, MI, MO, NC, OH, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, and WV.

WASHINGTON, D.C.///NEWS ADVISORY///The premature mortality due to air pollution from 18 major coal-fired power plants in 13 states exacts a steep price -- one that is actually higher than the estimated value of the electrical power that each plant produces, according to a major new analysis to be released on June 7, 2012 by the nonprofit Environmental Integrity Project (EIP).

The 18 dirty power plants are located in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia. The power plants reviewed in the EIP report are the worst sulfur dioxide polluters that currently have no publicly announced plans for pollution reduction steps, such as scrubbers.

Using the most conservative benchmark in the new EIP study, the U.S. power plants in question contribute to premature deaths that cost society more than the estimated retail value of the electricity they generated in 2011.
