BERLIN (Reuters) - Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMWG.DE) and Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) are planning to expand cooperation beyond green car technology and diesel engines, Der Spiegel magazine reported on Sunday, without citing any sources.

The German premium car maker agreed with the Japanese manufacturer last December to supply diesel engines to Toyota from 2014 in Europe and collaborate on lithium-ion battery research for electric cars.

Both companies have since been exploring other fields for cooperation and have now agreed several projects, Der Spiegel said without being more specific. BMW Chief Executive Norbert Reithofer and Toyota President Akio Toyoda will announce details in the near future, the magazine said.

A spokesman for Munich-based BMW declined to comment on the report.

Last week, BMW's joint venture to make hybrid car components with French auto maker PSA Peugeot Citroen (PEUP.PA) was thrown into doubt by the prospect of deepening ties between PSA and its European rival Opel, a division of General Motors (GM.N).

I bet BMW wants an “in” on electric cars, because their biggest market, China is requesting electric cars.

Big mistake though.

The self-acceleration problem with Prius and Camry, was tackled by some sleazy, high paid, science-ignorant lawyers. Their defense passed muster for the all non-scientist jury, but made absolutely no sense to real scientists. Toyota has plenty of money to hire the best lawyers, bought out PBS, even.

A couple of decades ago, I bought a couple of Toyotas and was satisfied then, but I’ll never buy a Toyota again now.
I just think their corporate culture has been taken over by money-hungry management and defended by money-hungry lawyers, with no regard for truth, real safety, particularly truthful representation to lawmakers.

California made a HUGE mistake in giving Prius buyers enormous tax breaks and free pass for the carpool lane some years back. It fattened up Toyota like never before. And when the economic crunch came, Toyota lay off in California was massive and devastating, clearly showing no regard to American workers, and set a priority on preserving Japanese jobs. I’ll think twice, maybe thrice before ever buying any Japanese cars. I think their reputation is over-rated as compared to a couple of decades ago.

German and Japanese work attitudes are very different. the ex partnerships like VW and Suzuki proved it. But it’s Toyota benefiting here, because of superior BMW diesel technology.

the prius problem is just a “new born technology” problem. other companies have such problems but they just dont call return
