Leading southeast Oklahoma ILEC leverages Zhone MXK platform to provide triple-play services to local access customers
Oakland, CA - August 15, 2012 - Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global leader in FTTx network access solutions, today announced that it is working with Cherokee Communications, the leading telecommunications provider in Southeast Oklahoma, to advance the service provider's network and support delivery of affordable triple-play services to residential and business subscribers.
Cherokee Communications' growing customer base demanded an upgrade of its network. To address the need for connectivity, turning to Zhone was the intuitive next step. The Zhone MXK(TM)platform boasts unmatched flexibility and scalability; its ability to provide Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) and VDSL2 connectivity in facilitating network and service upgrades has been repeatedly demonstrated in similar projects throughout North America.
The full-featured MXK enables Cherokee Communications to combine data, video and voice in one platform over a pure packet access network. With the integration of VDSL2 interfaces, which support bandwidth speeds up to 100Mbps, Cherokee Communications' customers will have access to wire-speed gigabit connectivity. The derived POTS lines will also enable the service provider to take advantage of a low-cost packet network and still provide subscribers with traditional POTS service.
"For our growing business, we needed an access vendor with effective network management capabilities," said Samuel Sanchez, operations manager at Cherokee Communications. "The increased density, scale and performance provided by the Zhone MXK and zNID(TM) Optical Network Terminals ONTs, allow us to simplify our network complexity and address any challenges. The primary reason we chose the Zhone solution was its ability to provide multiple services on a single platform, including Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM). This network upgrade allows us to provide advanced communications and connectivity to our residential and business customers."
"Like several of our other domestic customers, Cherokee Communications benefits from the full range of delivery mediums that can be deployed side-by-side in the MXK, limiting the cost of network upgrades and ongoing broadband deployments," explained Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. "Flexibility and ease of use are two of the core MXK functionalities that resonate with service providers, and ones that have helped make us a leading provider of fiber solutions in North America."
Zhone has extensive experience managing the complexity of multi-service access and, as a result, has built the telecom industry's most comprehensive portfolio of scalable FTTx solutions. The MXK's feature set aligns well with Cherokee Communications' specific field requirements, enabling Zhone to provide optimum cost efficiency and maximum service differentiation in the operator's network in combination with the zNID ONTs that will be installed at the residence and business sites to support individual subscriber service needs.
To date, Zhone has deployed more than 3,600 of its fully redundant, carrier-grade all-IP MXK platforms with more than 150 service providers globally, signaling an FTTx customer growth rate of more than 450 percent in the three-year period from January 2009 to January 2012. Total subscriber capacity supported by these deployments now exceeds 27 million. Featuring industry-leading density, scalability and switching capacity, the MXK is the industry's first terabit access concentrator and provides non-blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active Ethernet subscribers. Zhone has also driven more than 8,500 percent ONT growth and more than 9,800 percent OLT growth since solution inception.
