Rye Brook, NY, September 20, 2012 -- Changes to school meals this year mean a greater emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. As leaders in the school food service setting, Chartwells School Dining Services is committed to creating an awareness of healthy meal choices within the school dining center and beyond. To help students embrace these healthy updates in the lunch line, Chartwells is releasing brand new nutrition education programs for their schools across the country. These programs will expand healthy eating messages and education from the cafeteria to the classroom and community, reaching students, teachers, and families.

In an effort to further expand nutrition education from the cafeteria to the classroom and the home, Chartwells recently partnered with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to support efforts to end childhood obesity within a generation. The new program, Chartwells Classroom Connect, will utilize the resources of the Academy's Kids Eat Right campaign to further Chartwells' educational reach by connecting local nutrition educators to schools to provide quality nutrition education to students.

Chartwells' Food Focus Bulletin Board program will enable educators to promote healthy eating and good nutrition within their classrooms. The program focuses on a different food each month, such as leafy greens, whole grains, and berries. Teachers can download bulletin board kits monthly, which feature food facts, benefits, tips and colorful photos. They can also send handouts home each month that feature Chartwells' monthly Food Focus and a family-friendly recipe.

"Education and understanding of the changes to school meals essential for students this year," says Chartwells Vice President of Nutrition and Sustainability, Margie Saidel. "Children are more likely to try a new food if they know where it came from, what it tastes like, why it's good for them. Our programs help students feel comfortable trying, and liking, these great new foods on our menus this year."
