Obama says re-election gives him 'middle-class mandate'

WASHINGTON Wed Nov 14, 2012 2:17pm EST

WASHINGTON Nov 14 (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Wednesday said his re-election gives him a mandate to help the American middle class, but he does not presume his opponents agree with all of his ideas.

"I've got one mandate. I've got a mandate to help middle class families," Obama said in a wide-ranging news conference a week after winning re-election Nov. 6.

The president spoke two days ahead of his first talks with congressional leaders to avoid a jump off the 'fiscal cliff' of $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts looming at year's end.

The right wing strength in the GOP has made it clear that USA income tax-increase bills will never pass in the next 12 years. It requires a Super majority in the Senate plus a House majority with a Democratic President. That is not on the horizon.
The automatic income tax raise coming Jan. 1, 2013 is Obama’s only chance to save the USA credit rating and keep the USA Dollar as the reserve currency. The Obama plan is to let the tax on Wealthy raise and the middle class tax stay low. The GOP idea to hold the Middle-class hostage is an idle threat. If the GOP wants to have a deduction cap rather than part of taxing the wealthy, it better be good. The CAP is very LUMPY in helping or hurting middle class and rich people and even the poor.
If the GOP holds the middle class hostage, Obama should counter with instructions to the IRS to not collect the [middle class] raise for 4 months (with the possibility of continuing for all of 2013). It may be Marshal Law, so what! Obama and the Democratic Senate would be crazy to give an inch. The President would be a captive of the GOP forever if he lets down his guard.
The Debt ceiling and Social Security tax are two other related matters.
Health care and Social Security laws are difficult but there is no Gregory Norquist pledge in the way.

I am paying my Mandatory Annual Distribution from my pension accounts early this year (before Thanksgiving). This is to show support for the USA to raise revenue, to avoid going over the fiscal cliff. I hope others do too.
