(Reuters) - Pfizer Inc said on Monday a late-stage trial of a once-daily version of its drug Lyrica in patients with fibromyalgia, a pain condition affecting more than 5 million Americans, met its main goal.

Patients taking once-daily Lyrica, also known as pregabalin, went for a significantly longer period of time before feeling pain compared with patients who took a placebo.

The study is the second of three late-stage trials testing a controlled-release version of the drug, which is currently given several times a day.

A trial of the controlled-release version of the drug in patients with certain types of seizures did not meet its main goal, Pfizer said.

The company is also studying the drug in patients with neuralgia.

While what I am about to post is only anecdotal it is nonetheless an actual side effect of my use of Lyrica. I took Lyrica for approximately 3 weeks at the behest of a pain specialist and during that time gained approximately 60 pounds of weight that I have never been able to get rid of. Combined with other problems this has contributed to some severe effects with regards to my spinal stenosis and of course the continuing problem of not being able to lose weight.

Lyrica will cause weight gain IF your not aware and take steps to counteract. My diet is healthy and filled with veggies, fruits, whole grains and lean meats most of which I grill. I’ve eliminated soda from my diet using instead Agave nectar to sweeten. I preferred to skip the chemical based fake sweetners. When I do need a dry sweetner I use natural sugar made from coconut. But the biggest thing to not gaining weight is take advantage of Lyrica’s benefits is to get and stay active. Having taken up Yoga and a couple daily walks combined with a healthy diet are the key to avoiding Lyrica induced weight gain.
