House Speaker Boehner says no progress in budget talks
WASHINGTON |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - House Speaker John Boehner said White House and Republican negotiators had made no progress in talks to avert the "fiscal cliff" of sharp tax hikes and deep spending cuts that looms early in January.
"We're nowhere" Boehner, the top House Republican, said on "Fox News Sunday."
"We've put a serious offer on the table by putting revenues up there. ... But the White House has responded with virtually nothing," he said.
Boehner said Congress will never agree to the White House suggestion that the federal debt limit be raised without a congressional vote. "Congress is never going to give up that power. ... It is the only way to leverage the political process." he said.

a good senator would care about what the country needs, which is not a long series of no no no no no…
The biggest mistakes of the Bush tax cuts was that it took another 5% of the population off the tax rolls. In all the “uproar” over Romney’s 47% comment – did any of you bother check check the level of American’s not paying Federal income taxes in the past? In the middle of George H.W. Bush’s presidency – it was below 15%. Historically – this level has been in the mid 20 percent range at most. Under Clinton, it crept up, and under the Bush tax cut legislation – another 5% were taken off the rolls.
Whatever the “proper” level of government spending, you cannot have a rational debate while half the population is not seeing the bill.
