WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to travel to Newtown, Connecticut, on Sunday to meet with families of the victims of a Friday school shooting that was one of the deadliest such incidents in the nation's history.

The White House said in a statement Obama will speak at a 7 p.m. EST Sunday interfaith vigil for families of the victims and other students from Sandy Hook Elementary School, which was attacked on Friday by a heavily armed gunman.

In his weekly radio and internet address earlier on Saturday, Obama said it was time to "take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this."

But he stopped short of specifically calling for tighter gun-control laws.

I am a veteran. I have 26 years of service. I wanted to say something about this sickening crime. We have to let people carry arms, but that does not mean assault rifles.

This is just horrible and terrifying… no words can describe this tragedy with 20 children killed you cant fathom the horrifying scene this could bring to the naked eyes. very very upsetting. security must be set in every establishments in every state to ensure guns are kept and controlled when getting into every facilities. its not how you have gun control laws but beefing up security in every facilities gates, doors and public areas.

When this kind of tragedy happens, we hear the same tired arguments from the NRA: guns don’t kill people, it’s pointless to try to control them, no one has ever done it, etc. We would not register a car or driver with a terrible safety record, but that doesn’t mean we ban all cars. We just regulate them sensibly. Can you imagine the Founding Fathers endorsing assault rifles? They would roll over in their graves to hear the stupidity coming from those today who believe in zero gun regulation.
