WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden took the oath of office for his second term on Sunday at a small ceremony at his official residence, using a bible with a Celtic cross on the cover that has been in his family since 1893.

Biden chose Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to swear him in, making her the first Hispanic judge to ever administer an oath of office for one of the nation's two highest offices. Biden's family, about 120 guests and a few reporters witnessed the private ceremony.

The U.S. Constitution requires the president and vice president to be sworn in on January 20. President Barack Obama is slated to take his oath at a small ceremony at the White House at 11:55 a.m. EST).

Obama and Biden will repeat their oaths on Monday during a public ceremony at the U.S. Capitol. The ceremony will be followed by Obama's inaugural address and the inaugural parade down Pennsylvania Avenue, from the Capitol to the White House.

Obama impotent in 2nd term as lobby sets US foreign policy agenda

As Netanyahu leads Israel to ever greater isolation among the international community of democratic nations, the question is how much longer will America be willing to carry the Israeli state on its back to the detriment of global security and world peace?

President Obama has made clear both his disapproval of Netanyahu’s continued violation of international law and his personal distaste for the Israeli leader. However, he is restricted in his response by reason of the powerful American Zionist lobby that gives millions of dollars to members of Congress in order to secure the continuance of their collusion and the near 6 billion in US tax dollars that is gifted to the Israeli state every year in aid and loan guarantees.

Democracy, American style, allows unlimited donations to members of Congress, which gives political lobbyists including those acting in the interests of a foreign state, carte blanche to buy political influence particularly in the area of US foreign policy. This perverts the democratic process as it acts solely in the interests of a foreign state and a political lobby with unlimited funds, that does in no way represent the interests of the majority of the American electorate.

It is an invidious situation whereby an elected president, is legally rendered impotent by representatives acting for a foreign power and its political ideology, Zionism, which is not in the interests of American national security or of benefit to the US economy, or its electorate.

And that is a terrible tragedy for America and for the future of the wider world that looks to the US as the strongest defender of democracy and freedom in the 21st century.
