UnitedHealth Group Acts to Support People in Iowa, Illinois Affected by Flooding

  • Assistance for UnitedHealthcare plan participants who need access to care or early refills of prescription medications
  • Free emotional-support help line from Optum
  • Support of Red Cross relief efforts

UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) and its benefits and services businesses, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, are taking immediate action to help people living in Iowa and Illinois counties affected by the recent floods. This includes assisting health plan participants who may need access to care or early refills of prescription medications; a free emotional-support line; and supporting the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which is helping people in the affected communities.

  • Access to Care: Plan participants who have been displaced from their homes or whose network medical facility or physician is not accessible, and require assistance or special accommodations, can call customer care at the number located on the back of their medical ID card for assistance. If necessary, customer care professionals will help affected individuals obtain in-network benefits if a network provider is not available. UnitedHealthcare plan participants who do not have their medical ID card can call 866-633-2446, 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. (in the local time zone), Monday through Friday. Commercial members who have a smartphone can also download the free Health4Me app, which will provide instant access to their ID card, network providers, their personal health benefits and more.

    These measures apply to plan participants enrolled in all fully insured commercial products, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement plans and Medicaid plans. This policy is retroactively effective beginning April 17, 2013, and will be in effect through May 1, 2013.
  • Early Prescription Refills: People who have been displaced or do not have access to their medications will be able to have prescriptions refilled early. Members obtaining a refill are asked to alert the pharmacist that they were affected by the floods in order to ensure the early prescription refill request is processed appropriately.

    This includes plan participants enrolled in all fully insured commercial products, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Part D offerings or Medicaid plans (as applicable) insured through UnitedHealthcare. For mail-order delivery service to affected areas or any other questions related to their prescriptions, people are encouraged to call the pharmacy number on the back of their medical or prescription ID card, or speak directly to their pharmacist about their situation in order to get an early refill, if necessary.

    This policy is retroactively effective beginning April 17, 2013, and will be in effect through May 1, 2013.
  • Free Help Line: Optum, a leading health and behavioral health services company, is offering a free emotional-support help line.

    The toll-free number, 866-342-6892, will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for as long as necessary. The service is free of charge and open to anyone. Specially trained Optum mental health specialists help people manage their stress and anxiety so they can continue to address their everyday needs. Callers may also receive referrals to community resources to help them with specific concerns, including financial and legal matters.

  • Support for the American Red Cross: Through a $500,000 annual commitment, UnitedHealth Group participates in the Annual Disaster Giving Program of the American Red Cross, which is offering shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance to people in the affected communities.
