The Airport Commerce Connection: Bridging the Airport Purchasing Gap, Empowering Diverse Businesses to Reach New Heights in Supplying Airport Goods and Services

FedBid, Inc., the fully-managed online marketplace offering a better way for governments, business and educational institutions to buy simple goods and services, in partnership with the Airport Minority Advisory Council (AMAC) and channel partner BSN Central, is proud to announce the launch of “The AMAC Commerce Connection.”

AMAC, the only national, non-profit trade association dedicated to promoting the full participation of minority-owned, women-owned and disadvantaged business enterprises in airport contracting for the inclusion of minorities and women in employment, has spent the past 30 years championing the need to introduce and engage these businesses into airport supply chain purchasing decisions.

The Commerce Connection partnership is a giant leap forward in realizing that goal.

AMAC Executive Director, Shelby Scales, believes, “The launch of the AMAC Commerce Connection, with FedBid serving as the access-building, process-streamlining, competition-driving marketplace, has the potential to revolutionize the purchasing process between airport Buyers, Contractors and Concessioners and Diverse Sellers. Amplified with additional Seller-related resources from partners, B2Gnow and My Business Matches, we believe this commerce gateway will play a pivotal role in bridging the gap between Buyers who want to connect more effectively and easily with potential diverse suppliers, while making M/W/DBE’s aware of the wealth of opportunities available to them within the Airport commerce community—plus the 15,000+ FedBid-registered government, education and commercial business Buyers already actively procuring on FedBid.”

FedBid’s fully-managed online marketplace was literally designed to level the playing field and open the door to real market opportunities for small to medium-size businesses. In fact, fueling small business equal opportunity access was a cornerstone in FedBid’s development, says the company founder and CEO, Ali Saadat.

Says Mr. Saadat, “I spent the majority of my career building and guiding small to medium businesses serving the federal government. Through my experiences, I came to believe that the traditional way of doing things could be improved. I knew there was a better way to buy and sell—that we could create a platform that would level the field, so more companies would have more opportunities to participate and succeed. These are the beliefs that drive FedBid. Our marketplace was designed to challenge the status quo and it’s working.”

He added, “We are also focused on our double-bottom line, 'doing well by doing good'—fueling small business growth while helping federal, state and local governments, corporations and institutions get more spend under management to best serve their taxpayers and their shareholders. Our marketplace provides opportunity, transparency and efficiency, and we look forward to bringing our streamlined process and balanced access platform to our nation’s airports and their contractors.”

In FY12, over 85 percent of the nearly 30,000 federal government awards made on FedBid’s online marketplace were awarded to small businesses, adding up to over $1 billion in small business purchases. This marks the sixth year in a row that over 80% of the federal government awards on FedBid were won by small businesses.

Of that 85% of awarded small businesses, 21% were Minority-Owned, 23% were Women-Owned and 17% were Small Disadvantaged businesses. In addition, Veteran-Owned Small Businesses took 18.5% of award dollars, totaling nearly $240 million and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses took 13.9% of award dollars, totaling over $181 million.

FedBid Senior Vice President, Louis Schiavone Jr., currently leading the company’s growth into of State, Local and Education markets, believes that equal opportunity access, combined with an efficient purchasing process is nothing short of a healthy marketplace win-win, noting, “As our marketplace continues expanding into new markets and bringing in new Sellers through partnerships like the AMAC Commerce Connection, the opportunities for small businesses to get on more Buyers’ radars will increase tremendously. We expect a significant rise in these opportunities in years to come.”
