WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House reiterated on Thursday that President Barack Obama would make a decision on how to respond to chemical weapons use in Syria based on U.S. national security interests.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest noted in a briefing with reporters the comments by a top British official that the United States could make foreign policy decisions on its own.

Obama said in an interview with PBS on Wednesday that use of chemical weapons in Syria affected U.S. national interests.

Yes. We feel no obligation to abide by the rules of international behavior as codified in the UN charter even though we expect everybody else to abide by those rules. And I’m sure that Assad’s use (presuming he did use) of chemical weapons is an American national security issue even though Saddam Hussein’s use of chemical weapons back in the ’80s against the Iranians and his own people were not. Go figure.

I think Obama should get the clown on the phone, and while he’s on the phone point out that we just took out some meaningless target like a grain silo. And as we speak your childhood home is being obliterated. And in two, no make that one minute that empty ball field 2 miles from your immediate location will be wiped off the map. And if you ever use chemical weapons again we’ll plant a missile in your back pocket, because we always know where you are. Have a nice day! PS. No more ball field.
