Mouser Electronics Sponsors International Counterfeit Parts Avoidance Symposium

Mouser Quality Expert Chuck Amsden to Speak on Mitigating Counterfeits in the Authorized Supply Chain

Mouser Electronics, Inc., a leading design engineering resource and global distributor of semiconductors and electronic components, today announced its sponsorship and participation in a major symposium dealing with the problems of counterfeit electronic parts.

The SAE 2013 Counterfeit Parts Avoidance Symposium, scheduled for Sept. 27 in Montreal, will provide an open technical forum on the negative effects of counterfeit electronic parts and the processes to mitigate that impact on business. Special emphasis will be on the risks that counterfeit components pose to aerospace and defense manufacturers.

Industry leaders will participate in panel discussions and presentations on key issues, including identification of counterfeit parts, risk assessment, avoidance protocols, test methodologies and compliance. In the exhibition hall, Mouser will be in Booth 2 to answer questions about its quality measures and practices to ensure authorized parts and avoid risks of counterfeit. As an AS9120A authorized distributor, Mouser’s sponsorship of this SAE International event underscores the company’s dedication to supporting the fight against counterfeit products.

“Mouser is committed to ensuring every customer receives only authorized, genuine components,” states Pete Shopp, Mouser Senior Vice President of Business Operations. “Mouser strongly supports SAE International's commitment to helping the industry identify and avoid counterfeit parts.”

Chuck Amsden, Mouser’s Director of Quality, will be one of the symposium’s featured speakers. Amsden will speak at 1:30 p.m. on “Mitigating Counterfeit in the Authorized Supply Chain with AS6496,” which is the latest SAE standard in development for dealing with counterfeit electronics in authorized distribution.

“Upon completion, this standard will define the requirements for distributors operating in the authorized supply chain for mitigating counterfeits,” Amsden explains. “In my presentation, I will walk through the current draft, and point out many of the major details that differentiate AS6496 from previous standards.”

Mouser was a contributing member on the committee that wrote AS5553, the first SAE standard created to mitigate counterfeit electronics, and again contributed to AS6081, which is progressing to the next anti-counterfeiting standard, AS6496.

Amsden, who has more than 25 years of quality assurance and compliance experience, directs Mouser’s quality assurance staff and assures that the company’s distribution operations are in compliance with industry and company standards. He has helped lead Mouser to obtaining AS9120A/ISO9001:2008 and ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 certifications.

Mouser Electronics takes every possible precaution to ensure its customers are receiving authorized, genuine components. AS9120A is a quality management certification for distributors to the aerospace industry addressing chain of custody, traceability, control and availability of records. AS9120A certification requires rigorous purchasing, handling, storage, and traceability controls to prevent counterfeit and non-conforming electronic components from entering the supply chain. Mouser carries dual registration to AS9120A and ISO 9001:2008 to serve both customers purchasing aerospace components and those purchasing commercial products, and has also adopted relevant requirements of SAE standard AS5553 Counterfeit Electronic Parts: Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition into their AS9120A Quality Management System.

Mouser is an ECIA (Electronic Components Industry Association) and CEDA (China Electronics Distributor Alliance) authorized distributor.
