MOSCOW (Reuters) - Syria welcomes a Russian proposal to place the nation's chemical weapons under international control, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem said on Monday after talks in Moscow, praising the Kremlin for seeking to "prevent American aggression".

Moualem, who spoke to reporters through an interpreter after Russia expressed hope the proposal could avert military strikes against Syria, stopped short of saying explicitly that President Bashar al-Assad's government accepted it.

"I state that the Syrian Arab Republic welcomes the Russian initiative, motivated by the Syrian leadership's concern for the lives of our citizens and the security of our country, and also motivated by our confidence in the wisdom of the Russian leadership, which is attempting to prevent American aggression against our people," he said.

Because defending millions of helpless people from a brutal government who’s already killed 100,000 is “aggression”.

Syria will be bombed to stone age without any deterrent in hand. This will create more problems for neighboring countries. Therefore Russia should establish Air Bases in Syria to keep a watch on Chemical weapons.

MiddleAmericaMS- you just don’t get it, do you. The US is not going to attack Syria to defend anyone. If that was what this was about, it would have happened years ago. Listen to what Obama and Kerry have said: the proposed attack is not about Syria, or Syrians: it’s about American credibility. To defend the power of American threats against various people, now and in the future, Syria has to be attacked. Defending people has not a lot to do with it.

If you apply a layer of defending people on top of bombing in the name of just plain showing little people who’s boss- well, to the people who want to throw this little country against the wall just to show who is in charge, and who should not be messed with- you’re what Lenin would call “a useful idiot.” You’re a sucker. You’re being tricked.
