MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Barack Obama discussed the idea of placing Syria's chemical weapons arsenal under international control on the sidelines of a G20 summit last week, Putin's spokesman said on Tuesday.

"The issue was discussed," spokesman Dmitry Peskov said by telephone. He would not say who raised the issue or give other details.

Russia announced its proposal to put Syrian chemical weapons under international control on Monday. Hours earlier, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could avoid a U.S. military strike by surrendering all his chemical weapons within a week but added that Assad "isn't about to do it and it can't be done".

Nominate Obama and Putin for Nobel Peace Prize! Like the Osama Bin Laden raid and eventual success, President Obama has been very cool, deliberate, nuanced and smart about the whole chemical weapons problem in Syria. Unlike Bush II (and what Karl Rove said of Obama recently), this President and his team don’t rush into “being the Decider” and lead by lying and acting macho and being the cowboy into an unnecessary war that cost more than a trillion bucks and untold number of deaths, including Iraqi and American lives.

This is a win for Obama. He forced Putin to accept that Assad has CW and also forced him to give it up. Israel will be safer for this and Assad will not stay in power because that will be included in the discussion.
