From Farm to School

The healthfulness of the cranberry begins at the farm with the 700 Ocean Spray grower-owners who have preserved the family farming way of life. Tuesday, Oct. 8, the bog will play host to a lucky group of D.C. school children who will have the unique opportunity to don waders and immerse themselves in the rich history and heritage of the cranberry alongside multi-generational American cranberry growers. The students will learn about the fruit’s healthy origins, as well as how cranberries get from the farm to their table.

The cranberry’s big, bold taste, vibrant color and endless versatility make it the perfect addition to any meal — especially lunch. “Recipes like Ocean Spray’s Turkey Cranberry Rollup with Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce, Craisins® Dried Cranberries Breakfast Bars and whimsical Ladybugs on a Log are the perfect way to sneak more fruit in at breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack time,” said Neva Moore, the Ocean Spray grower-owner from New Jersey who will lead the school visit on Tuesday. “There’s nothing more rewarding than showing children where their food comes from, especially when it’s a fresh, healthy fruit like the cranberry.”

Products like Ocean Spray 100% Juices and Craisins® Dried Cranberries are fruit choices on USDA MyPlate. Consumers looking to meet these daily requirements can choose different single serving options including 4 fluid ounces of Ocean Spray® 100% Juice Blends, one-half cup of fresh cranberries or one-quarter cup of dried cranberries.

“Cranberries are like Mother Nature’s super fruit!” said Ken Romanzi, COO Ocean Spray Global. “They are naturally low in sugar, allowing us to develop a wide variety of product choices and reduced sugar options. We have a long history of providing nutritious products that support the health and wellness of our consumers, from the land that our growers farm and care for.”

A Healthful Fruit from a Good Place

Can’t visit the bog? Don’t worry! Visitors of all ages can still learn about the cranberry’s rich heritage. Below are some fun facts about the cranberry:

  • Cranberries are one of only three native fruits cultivated in the United States.
  • Contrary to popular belief, cranberries do not grow in water. They grow on vines in beds layered with sand, peat, gravel and clay. These beds, commonly known as "bogs," were originally made by glacial deposits.
  • In addition to Massachusetts, the major growing areas for cranberries are New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, the Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Quebec, and Chile.
  • Cranberries are naturally low in sugar. They are fat-free, cholesterol-free and a good source of fiber.
  • The power of the cranberry centers on its well-documented urinary tract health benefits and emerging heart health properties.
  • Americans consume 400 million pounds of cranberries a year; 80 million pounds during Thanksgiving week.
  • This year, 80 percent of the cranberries harvested will be consumed in North America; the rest will be shipped overseas where the cranberry is gaining popularity.
  • It takes 4,400 pressed cranberries to make one gallon of cranberry juice.
