Call For Competitors, 2014 Chicago Flower & Garden Show Cake Decorating Contest

Chicago Area Retail Bakers Association Announces Competition, Opens Registration

On the last day of the Chicago Flower & Garden Show, there are people attending who may not give a piffle about petals. These devotees are a different kind, visiting to enjoy the smell of sugar, not blooms, while watching the Chicago Area Retail Bakers Association (CARBA) 14th Annual Cake Decorating Competition.

"There is quite a cheering section," says Beth Fahey, co-owner of Creative Cakes in Tinley Park, Vice President of CARBA and the coordinator of the Competition. "This audience understands the value of fresh ingredients, higher quality and good food. The Competition is beneficial to bakeries because they get a chance to put their work in front of hundreds of potential buyers."

CARBA is now calling for entries for the 2014 Cake Decorating Competition, to be held Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Navy Pier at the Chicago Flower & Garden Show. To be eligible, competitors must be associated with an independent, retail bakery, either as an employee or owner, and have at least two years of experience. Decorators are required to bring a completed rolled fondant cake and then decorate a four-tier wedding cake and a sculpted cake during the Competition. Competitors must apply by January 28, 2014. CARBA members are free to compete; non-members will be assessed $75. The winner of this Affiliate contest will then represent CARBA at the National RBA Competition.

"CARBA itself and all the wisdom of its members have been enormously helpful to our growing business," says Fahey, "and competing at the Flower & Garden Show has been a significant benefit to us. Our customers love seeing us there, and we gain new customers each year as they realize it's worth the extra dollars to get a real custom cake - something that doesn't come out of a bucket or box, something you'd only see on television - from your local bakery."
