LIMA, March 15 (Reuters) - Peru's economy expanded a lower-than-expected 4.23 percent in January, the government said on Saturday, as growth in the lynchpin mining industry was offset by weakness in the manufacturing sector.

A Reuters poll had put growth for the first month of the year at 4.85 percent year-on-year.
